Think of the stars as distant suns

Chapter 7 of the original book examines both mythological explanations attached to the night sky and the attempt to find natural causes. If we consider stars as distant suns, we must be able to distinguish between the apparent brightness and the actual light source.

The tendency to explain natural phenomena in terms of natural causes opens up questions rather than closing them. This is because we can consider how observations change depending on the explanation, and then test the explanation with those observations.

  1. Even the same light source appears dimmer when viewed from a greater distance.
  2. When light spreads spherically, the area receiving the same amount of light is inversely proportional to the square of the distance.
  3. Therefore, we cannot determine a star's actual brightness or size solely based on its apparent brightness.

A question that changed before the identity of the star

Attributing names and stories to the light in the night sky is different from explaining what physical object that light is. When reading the original book's ancient philosophical stories, don't just look for who first stated the "correct" answer today, but also consider what kinds of questions were allowed.

If you try to explain a natural phenomenon using another natural phenomenon, it opens the door for comparing the explanations. However, simply using natural words does not automatically mean that the explanation has been verified. You must be able to say what to observe in order to modify the explanation.

Thinking about atoms versus verifying atoms

Democritus' atomic theory attempted to explain matter and change in terms of atoms and empty space. Ancient atoms were considered indivisible, and this idea was not based on evidence such as modern atomic theory.

This leads to two different interpretations. One interpretation is to praise the modern science for having already found the "correct" answer, based on the fact that it was said long ago. The other interpretation is to ask what problems the people of that time were trying to solve within the concepts and arguments that were possible at the time. The latter interpretation avoids imposing modern terms on the thoughts of the past.

Questions to ConsiderHow can we connect ancient atomic theories with modern atomic theories?

The person who creates knowledge, and the person who can review it.

Now, broaden the question from the individual's mind to the conditions of society. If only some individuals have the opportunity to read others' observations, point out errors, use tools, and leave their own results, which explanation will survive?

This is not an argument that a particular society monopolizes science, or that one institution alone can explain the rise and fall of science. It is a reading that asks about the hidden conditions of education, record-keeping, and criticism when we explain discovery solely based on individual talent. The problem of responsibility in the last chapter is already contained within this question.

Discoveries and their limits

We must distinguish between distance, intrinsic luminosity, and intervening absorption. This experiment assumes a light source with no absorption and isolates the effect of distance.
