Imagine the world beneath the clouds again
Chapter 4 shows the danger of freely imagining a planet’s environment from its appearance. Similar size and clouds do not establish that a planet has an Earth-like surface.
Comparing the atmospheres of different worlds reveals that Earth's atmosphere is also unique. The environment of a planet is determined not only by its distance from the sun, but also by its atmosphere, the flow of energy, and its long history.

- The surface temperature of Venus reaches approximately 467°C.
- The surface pressure is about 93 times that of Earth's sea level pressure.
- The atmosphere is primarily composed of carbon dioxide, which creates a strong greenhouse effect, trapping heat.
Inferring the world behind the clouds
Commentary following the planetary comparisons in chapter 4 of the original book. Modern planetary data provide additional context; this does not predict identical futures for Venus and Earth.
Similar sizes do not necessarily mean the same environment.
The size of a planet and the presence of clouds are noticeable information. However, you cannot automatically read surface temperature, pressure, and atmospheric composition from just their appearance.
When imagining an alien planet, Earth can be a good starting point, but it shouldn't be the only answer. Develop a hypothesis based on similarities, and then test that hypothesis with other measurements.

An explanation that doesn't end with a single distance
The amount of energy received from the sun is important, but a planet's environment is not determined by a single distance. You need to consider how the atmosphere transmits and releases energy.
This document explains the strong greenhouse effect of Venus, due to its high surface temperature and thick carbon dioxide atmosphere. The strength of the explanation increases when multiple measurements are linked together using the same process.

Questions from returning from another planet
Ending the story of Venus solely as an extreme case would mean missing the opportunity to understand Earth's atmosphere. Comparisons allow us to see which conditions maintain the environment.
It is also important to maintain the differences between the two planets. Studying the same physical processes while stating that the two planets follow exactly the same path is a different claim.

Discoveries and their limits
Rather than relying on a single piece of evidence, such as the presence of clouds, a comprehensive hypothesis is needed that explains temperature, pressure, and atmospheric composition. The purpose of comparing Venus and Earth is not to assert that they will have identical futures.
Divide the insights that can be brought from Venus to Earth, and the conclusions that cannot be directly transferred.
